South Downs

A popular event on the calendar for Tone Zone is the South Downs 10k, Half Marathon and Marathon. With no relay event going ahead this ahead this year a lot of the clubs runners turned to take on the full marathon. A challenging 26.2 miles over the scenic South Downs Way from Slindon to Queen Elizabeth Country Park, taking on over 3,000 feet of elevation in 4 distinct steep climbs.

The first three home for the club were Peter Lee, Jack Penfold and Michael Manwill. Lee struggled with cramp in the closing stages of the race but managed to push through for a sub 4 hour time (3:48), a time he’d hoped he could achieve. Penfold completed his second marathon in 4:18, finding the final couple of undulating miles tough but again achieving his target of a sub 4:30. Manwill was the third club member home finishing just behind Penfold in 4:21. One Tone Zone member had been training particularly hard for this event over the previous few months, and that showed off for Neil Pacey. Pacey had a very strong race and finished in 4:37, a time that was 42 minutes faster than he ran last year and 9 minutes faster than any other marathon he’d ran before. Andy Mair, Jess Thomson and Andrew Shill all finished soon after. Mairin 4:41 with Shill and Thomson, who had won 1st lady in the Hayling Billy 5 during the week both completed the challenging course in 4:46. A group of the clubs runners who normally compete in the relay event under the name of Jelly Bean and All Sorts ran the full marathon distance together with their traditional sweet patterned shorts. Lisa, Susi, Deb, Alison, Jackie and Karen finished in 5:46, really demonstrating good team work and spirit to help each other. Jude and Stuart finished their marathon in 6:19 just ahead of Jade Fish who crossed the line in 6:34.

The South Downs Half Marathon was also held at the same time as the marathon, 6 of the clubs runners competed in this. Duncan Stephenson-Gill was the first for the club to finish in 1:44. Next home for the club was Juliet Stallard who picked up another award, Stallard finished in 1:45 and was the first to finish in her age category. The other club runners to run the half marathon were Stan Mack, Derek Natoli, Paul Stevenson and Jo Hall. The other event of the day in the South Downs was the 10k event. Lucy Gardner who hadn’t ran a race since 2007 was flying the club colours in the 10k event. Gardner finished in 50 minutes and won in her age category.
